Ceremonial entries were organised for different events: coronation, marriage, welcoming of a visitor… Of those large-scale ceremonies, not much has survived as most of the decorations were ephemeral. The most important sources to reconstruct them are the Festival books, recording the progress of the ceremony, and the testimonies of people who observed the event, courtiers or anonymous witnesses. None of these records are fully reliable, but they balance each other and help us to visualise these events as well as to understand how these entries were perceived by different audiences. We can then wonder how useful ceremonial entries were for propagating political messages in early modern Europe. For that, we will analyse the political messages that could be transmitted by the different actors. We will also see what tools they used to explicit their messages and we will try to determine how understandable they were.
